On November 3, 2013, Dr. Maria Burmaster of Barataria Dental in Marrero, LA, participated in the first Mission of Mercy in Louisiana. This ADA sponsored event is aimed at providing dental health care to the many people of the New Orleans area without access to dental care through Medicare or regular dental insurance. In the state of Louisiana, only children have access through Medicaid to dental health care. This leaves many adults in need without access to annual check ups or treatment for a dental problem. This can often result in patients having to go to the hospital ER in a dental emergency.
At this Mission of Mercy event, Dr. Burmaster was one of many area dentists who donated their time to treat a large number of patients at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans. With the help of 1100 volunteers, approximately 800 patients were able to receive dental cleanings, root canals, tooth extractions and even dentures! With recent studies showing that oral health is directly related to overall physical health, the Mission of Mercy (MOM) events sponsored in over 25 states are helping to fill an important healthcare void.
Dr. Burmaster of Barataria Dental was the Chairperson for the New Orleans event, helping to coordinate the many volunteers necessary to serve a large number of patients and provide a variety of procedures and treatments. Dr. Burmaster helped to create a temporary 100 chair clinic that accepted patients on a first-come, first-served basis.
Giving back to the community has been an important and ongoing part of Dr. Burmaster’s professional career, having participated in other nationally based charity events such as Donated Dental Services. Recently voted a Top Dentist by New Orleans Magazine, Barataria Dental offers a wide variety of dental services to Marrero and the surrounding communites.
