The first Louisiana Mission of Mercy (MOM) event, which took place in the New Orleans area on November 3, 2013, brought not only much needed dental care for those in need, but changed the lives of many who were able to receive new teeth and a renewed sense of confidence and dignity.
A Mission of Mercy patient receives new teeth for the first time in 33 years!
This event, coordinated by many local dentists and volunteers, included the help of Barataria dentists, staff, and their families! Dr. Valerie Hemphill was in charge of Radiology for the entire event that day, coordinating the care of patients who received dental X-rays and the volunteers who helped with this department. Dr. Hemphill was joined by Dr. Burmaster who was a Chairperson for the first MOM event held in Louisiana.
Both Dr. Burmaster and Dr. Hemphill would like to express their gratitude to the staff members and family who supported them that day:
Amy Pena Dardar registered volunteers as they arrived, gave them volunteer shirts, sent them to the departments, oriented them to their duties for the day.
Sherri Verrette handled the data entry for all of the patients after their treatment was complete.
Brandi Lore worked in several areas including the Central Supply area which involved keeping track of all of the dental materials, gloves, masks, anesthesia, filling supplies, etc. for the day.
Tran Nguyen worked in the Sterilization area with 20 autoclaves running non-stop all day.
Trang Nguyen, one of our hygienists, performed cleanings on patients for several hours and also helped with sterilization.
Thuy Kim, our other hygienist, provided cleanings for patients and also worked in Radiology with Dr. Valerie.
Terrence Verrette (Sherri’s husband), Barron Burmaster (Dr. Maria’s husband) and John Burmaster (Dr. Maria’s son) arrived at 4:00 a.m. to direct parking for the event.
And Diane Ribando, mother of Dr. Maria and Dr. Valerie, volunteered her time to walk around and talk to as many patients as she could to help ease their fears about dental treatment. We love you Mom!!!
